RETIREMENT NEWS: LARRY V SHOCKS PACK WITH RETIREMENT DECISION

The Vancouver Wolfpack were stunned to learn today that starting RB Larry Villanueva has decided to retire at the age of 29.  The former 5th round pick used his speed to carve out a solid career rushing for 5,765 yards and 46 TDs while sharing time in the backfield in Tucson and Vancouver.   Villanueva's best seasons came in S15 and 16 where the RB rushed for over 1200 yards in each year and hit double digit TDs each season as well.   The former Notre Dame product is not expected to enter coaching.

RETIREMENT NEWS: HYBRID FB/RB SAMI OZIL BIDS FAREWELL AFTER 12 SEASONS!

One of the original international prospects to crossover to the HIFL has announced his retirement.   Sami Ozil is stepping away from the field at the age of 34.   The fullback is one of the most successful runners from the position in the league's history rushing for 3,318 yards and 34 TDs across his career.   In S16, working as the Brewers primary goal line RB, Ozil found paydirt 13 times..  While the IFAF is an option for coaching, Ozil could look to land a spot on the staff in Munich as the league expands to the German market for the first time since the St. Paul Lynx established a training pipeline with the nation through the Puma training initiative 12 years ago.

RETIREMENT NEWS: GM PANCHO'S EARLY WHOAS IN TUCSON CONTINUE AS DE ARTHUR MATTHEWS RETIRES WHILE BEING OWED $21MM FOR S18!

The hits keep coming for the Tucson Stars as DE Arthur Matthews announces his decision to step away from the game.  The 34 year old DE is owed $21MM in salary for S18 with a mutual option for S19 and while the Texas A&M product declined the mutual option for S19, he is owed big money for this season for a Stars club that is already strapped for cash.

Matthews was originally the 1st pick in the 5th round of the Season 5 draft, the first of the "GM Era" in the HIFL.  After spending his rookie year in Oakland where he collected 8 sacks, Matthews was drafted to Atlanta in the expansion draft of S6 before moving to New Jersey, Kansas City, Seattle, and finally Tucson.   During his 13 year career he piled up 179 career sacks, good for 6th all-time in league history.
Matthews thrived in Travis Knight's 3-4 system collecting 50 of his 179 career sacks in a 3 year period but his career best came in 2023 when he racked up 25 sacks for Frosty Murdoch and the Seattle Lumberjacks.

RETIREMENT NEWS: MYLES JACK ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AT 33!

Versatile LB Myles Jack is hanging up his cleats after an 11 year carer.   The former 6th overall pick out of UCLA spent most of his career in San Antonio before moving to Kansas City, and then playing the final stretch of last season in Long Beach this last year.    In 168 games, Jack collected 1152 tackles, 115 TFL, 58 Sacks, 8 INT, and 54 PDs.

Jack's 603 tackles in San Antonio go down as the franchise's all-time record as the team ceased operations at the conclusion of this past season.

Myles says he is planning to return to the college level where he hopes to join the UCLA coaching staff.

RETIREMENT NEWS: GET THE GOLD JACKET READY! AFTER MVP SEASON, BRUCE WILKINSON ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AFTER 12 SEASONS, 341 SACKS!

CHAPEL HILL -- On the campus where he played his college football, the reigning HIFL MVP Bruce Wilkinson announced that he was retiring from the game he played at a hall of fame level for the past 12 seasons.

Wilkinson changed the game and reset nearly every record a defensive lineman could hold during his dominant career.  The league's all-time Sack leader (341), All-Time Forced Fumbles Leader (52), All-Time Tackles for Loss Leader (275), and the leader amongst all defensive linemen in career tackles (1230, 11th all-time) was a nightmare for linemen, quarterbacks, and coaches alike.

After being selected 10th overall in the S6 Draft out of the University of North Carolina, Wilkinson started a string of 20+ sack seasons that stretched from his rookie campaign until S13 where injury's limited him to 13 games and 14 sacks.   When he returned from injury he played better than ever before with 34 sacks in S14, 28 in S15, a record shattering 55 in S16, and 48 during his MVP campaign in S17.

As the first and only defensive player to win the MVP award, Wilkinson redefined what it meant to be a franchise defensive player.
The 6-time defensive player of the year (S9, S12, S14-17) will surely go down in history as one of the greatest players to ever step onto the grid iron.

It is unknown what the future holds for Bruce, but few expect him to stay completely away from the game, whether its coaching at the college level or something else, one thing is for certain, QBs across the league are breathing a sigh of relief that #7 is calling it a career at the age of 36.

Wilkinson announced during his retirement that he was forgoing the money owed to him by the Nighthawks saying "They've given me the world, I don't need anything else from them."

O-LINE GOAT, ANTHONY SMITH ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AS GENERATIONAL TALENTS CONTINUE TO RIDE OFF INTO THE SUN SET

DC -- Likely first ballot hall of famer Anthony Smith, the greatest left tackle in league history, is retiring after 15 years in the league.
The former 2nd round pick turns in an epic career that will go down as one of the best of all time.

Drafted 2nd in the 2nd round out of Tulane to the then-league worst DC Cobras, Smith had a strong rookie campaign allowing 0 sacks, but in his sophomore season after moving to the left side in S4, Smith struggled allowing 11 sacks and followed that up with a 7 sacks allowed campaign but in S8 it all came together for the GOAT and in the next 11 seasons he would allow only 2 sacks while starting every.single.game.

Smith retires with a league record 1,604 pancakes and only 30 sacks allowed but non since the two he gave up in Seattle during Season 13.  Since hte league began recording missed blocks in S15 Smith has only missed two blocks making him a sure fire hall of famer, the only question is when.

Smith ends his career on a 227 games started streak and can also boast that across 11 play off games and 2 impact bowl championships he allowed 0 sacks in the post-season. Smith also won Offensive Player of the Year during Season 9 marking the first and only time an offensive lineman has ever won the award.

He is expected to return to his hometown of Ruston, LA and coach his son's high school football team.

RETIREMENT NEWS: "THE CHEAT CODE" SAYS ITS TIME TO MOVE ON, ANNOUNCES DECISION TO RETIRE AFTER 11 YEARS, 4 OPOTY, 2 MVP, AND 2 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The most dynamic dual threat QB to ever grace  HIFL field is saying goodbye.  Today Jamie Ortega announced that after an illustrious 11 year career with the Alabama Nighthawks, his body was telling him it was time to move on from Football.

"I haven't played a full 16 (game season) since S11, I've won MVP since then, but wasn't at my best.  My style of play is all or nothing, and if I can't give it my all, then I don't want to half ass it."  Ortega said during a media session in Alabama.

The 2 time MVP ends his career with 31,388 passing yards, 259 touchdowns, 106 interceptions; 13,171 rushing yards, and 149 rushing touchdowns.

Ortega ranks 9th all time in passing, 6th in passing TDs, and also 4th all-time in rushing behind only Adrian McCaffrey, John Spurgeon, and Curt Robles; while being the league's all-time rushing TD scorer.

Unstoppable from anywhere on the field but especially the goal line, Ortega is a one of a kind talent that we may never see again.
he is expected to go into sports media, with a podcast set to launch on draft day.  Stay tuned.
