S16 - WEEK 1

NIGHTMARE SZN: PASS RUSHERS THRIVE ON WEEK 1 O-LINEMEN AS BRUCE WILKINSON SETS NEW SINGLE-GAME SACK RECORD WITH 10 VS. DALLAS!

4 sacks is a career day.  5 sacks is epic.  6 sacks is legendary.  7 sacks? That's all-world and sets franchise records anywhere in the league and puts you on the same plain as the best single-game performances in history, but 10?  Ten sacks is McFadden 25 on rookie with the sliders dropped to nothing.  Ten sacks is something that is engraved in your plaque in the ring of honor and immortalized in the hall of fame.  This weekend we saw defensive tackle Bruiser Elliott matched is Season 15 16-game total when he took down Crows QB Fabian Vardy six times setting an Atlanta Underground and personal record in the process.  Meanwhile in Rapid City, Talon Wilkinson II punished Charles Hyland to the tune of 7 sacks on his way to tying the HIFL single-game record for sacks and setting a new Las Vegas franchise record at the same time as TWII was dominating the Inferno offensive line, the Dallas Mariachis 2nd year offensive lineman James Stiltner was setting not only setting the record for sacks allowed in a game, but also watching from the turf as Bruce Wilkinson blazed a trail from the line of scrimmage to quarterback Hilton Keegan on the way to shattering the league's single game sack record and setting it at what has to be considered an unobtainable level.

After the game, the elder Wilkinson joked, "I saw an ESPN alert during the commercial break on the jumbotron saying 'Little T' had 7 and I was just like... 'challenge accepted.' and went from there.  They kept dropping back and I just kept getting through my blocks, but it was a special day, that's for sure, I mean for a lot of guys 10 sacks in a year is a solid season and we're just getting started, so lets go!"

With teams looking to the skies for offense more and more recently, defenses have been forced to prepare for the air raid offense even when it simply means a high volume of passes from a more traditional offensive set.  Last season the HIFL set a league-wide record for passing attempts in a season with 15,893 passes thrown.  This weekend the league saw over 1,000 passing attempts, a record number that saw a record number of sacks come with it.

"You have to understand" said one HIFL executive, "If you drop back more, you're asking your O-line to block more, meaning more chances for the defense to get home and put the QB down, it is an inherent risk of passing at a high level."

The league saw a total of 136 sacks across it's slate of week one games putting the league on pace for a record 2,312 by seasons end compared to last season's total of 1,424; an increase of 3.5 sacks per game.

PFL WEEK 1 HEADLINES

BREAKING NEWS: BAY AREA BLOWOUT: SEA LIONS NEW QB RYAN HALLQUIST SHINES WITH 7 TD DAY AS BAY AREA CRUSH ALBUQUERQUE 66-7!

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sea Lions fans feared the worst for their franchise when MVP QB Alejandro McGhee left the PFL for the High Impact Football League, but in the off-season the club made an attempt to replace him with Ryan Hallquist a former 6th overall pick out of Oregon State who fell from grace after bouncing between three franchises during his four year career with Charlotte, Miami, and Louisville.

Hallquist exploded onto the PFL scene with a stat line for the ages dissecting the Albuquerque defense to the tune of 495 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions on 24/29 (82.8%) passing.

When asked about his debut and leaving the HIFL during his post game press conference, Hallquist said, "The HIFL is a machine. It will chew you up and spit you out.  GM's come and go, pass players around like broken toys in a daycare, and the worst part is they try to tell you they care about you and are your buddy the entire time.   One GM promised to draft me during the draft process and then just kept moving on draft day; I should've known right then it was a all a fraud, but hey... all that B.S. lead me here.  Now I'm ready to carve out my legacy and help the PFL prove it can be the best league in the world."

During his time in the HIFL, Hallquist passed for 15,649 yards 102 touchdowns and 54 interceptions. Now the 27 year old is looking to prove that the 2-year $37MM per season contract he inked with the Sea Lions is just the start.

PEARL HARBOR - In one of the most unique plays the HIFL has ever seen, Vancouver Wolfpack return man John Young made sure to carve his name in the memories of Pearl Harbor fans and players a like for years to come thanks to an extreme amount of athleticism, determination, and a little bit of luck.

In the 4th quarter of this weekends tilt between the Pack and the Preds, Vancouver looked to get the ball back in the 4th quarter, down 16-15, with the ball at the Pearl Harbor 8 yard line.  Vancouver special teams coordinator Domenic Caron called for a late showing block attempt that saw return man John Young attack the line of scrimmage at a full sprint; the agile Young avoided the block and managed to get a hand on the ball as Punter Brian "Brains" McCoy attempted to boot the ball out of his own end zone.

The diving play lead to the ball bouncing right back into the arms of McCoy who quickly scrambled to escape his own end zone to avoid a touchdown or safety for the Pack.   By rule, the punter is allowed to boot the ball again as long as it has not crossed the line of scrimmage, but with traffic all around him McCoy's rare double-punt had hang time, but little distance; the ball bounced at the Predators 23 yard line and bounced awkwardly.  The double-punt confused many players on the field, several Wolfpack players began signaling for a penalty while the Predators who saw the ball on the field looked at it as if it were no longer a live ball... Re-Enter Young.  The speedster attacked the football, scooping it up and dashing to the end zone while others looked at him in confusion until the referee signaled "TOUCHDOWN" giving the Wolfpack a 12 yard punt return touchdown and the lead!

The Predators challenged the play, but after consulting with the head of officiating during the review, the officials explained to both sides that the play was legal and would stand.   The Pearl Harbor fans showered the field with boos, but in the end the unlikely and unbelievable play proved to be a highlight of the week for anyone not wearing Purple and Black.

BREAKING NEWS: BARBARA SNOW'S DECISION TO TRADE GENERAL MANAGER WESLEY BENNETT TO ATLANTA RESULTS IN CHAIN REACTION DUE TO AGENT JAY C'S REFUSAL TO WORK WITH GM BENNETT!

ST. PAUL -- They say the season doesn't begin until the first big trade and at this point it is safe to say Season 16 is well underway now!
The Football world has had its eyes on the St. Paul Lynx over the past several weeks as drama seemed to flood the organization from public disputes on twitter between QB Aaron Kitchen and RB Willis McNasty, to alleged punches being thrown by DT Jerry Worthington, to Aaron Kitchen refusing the play and being suspended, but the latest chapter unfolded this weekend when Barbara Snow was informed by Kitchen that he would not return to the team and was requesting a trade after reportedly being told by GM Bennett that "the players need to settle this themselves."

With GM Bennett removing himself from the equation, players reported to Ms. Snow and she was made aware that Kitchen's agent, Jay C, had advised all his clients in St. Paul, Kitchen, back up QB Gunner Cole, and RB Willis McNasty, to sit out of the game due to GM Bennett's failure to resolve the issue with Kitchen.

Things were made worse when WR Max Ramos joined the players sitting out, along with DT Jerry Worthington who was benched by head coach Alberto Kidwell due to his actions a week earlier where he allegedly punched Kitchen, resulting in the QB losing a tooth.

Alberto Kidwell, a hall of famer as a player, serving in his first year as head coach in St. Paul is said to have restored order with his handling of Worthington and Kitchen, who were pulled into a private meeting with Kidwell and Snow to put to rest the remaining animosities between them.   While the meeting was said to be tense, it did prove to resolve the issues once all parties were made aware that the decision had been made to move on from GM Wesley Bennett.

"GM Bennett refused to commit to his decisions.  He flip flopped at every turn and it came to a point where he had to go, or Kitchen, Worthington, and Coach Kidwell were all prepared to walk away, and that was not an option for me as the owner." Barbara Snow said in a statement when asked about her decision to pull the plug on the Bennett-era after only 6 weeks.

Snow reached out to Atlanta owner Riddick Lewis and offered Bennett in a trade, Lewis was quick to accept but was forced into making some moves prior to acquiring GM Bennett due to the fact that Jay C had released a statement that he was "done" with GM Bennett for the foreseeable future due to Bennett's handling of his clients in conjunction with issues the two parties had dating back to GM Bennett's time in Music City.

As a result the Eastern Conference got a shocking shake up that breaks down as follows:

Trade 1:

Alabama Nighthawks Receive:
WR Ulysses Jacks
CB George Vu
$5MM International Bonus Pool Money

Atlanta Underground Receive:
S17 1st Round Pick (Alabama)
S18 2nd Round Pick (Alabama)
S19 2nd Round Pick (Alabama)
WR Oliver Giles
CB Cleo Walters

Trade 2:

Cleveland Mustangs Receive:
DT Bruiser Elliott

Atlanta Underground Receive:
DT John Rosado
S17 3rd Round Pick (Cleveland)
S17 4th Round Pick (Cleveland)
S18 1st Round Pick (Cleveland)
S18 2nd Round Pick (Cleveland)
S18 3rd Round Pick (Cleveland)

-Atlanta Retains $8.5MM salary

Trade 3:

St. Paul Lynx Receive:
WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
S17 2nd Round Pick (Kansas City)
S18 2nd Round Pick (Alabama)
S18 2nd Round Pick (Cleveland)
S19 2nd Round Pick (Alabama)

Atlanta Underground Receive:
GM Wesley Bennett
WR Michael Reed

In the end GM Bennett will have a chance to compete in a struggling Mid-South Division, one featuring his former team the Music City Kings.   Atlanta boasts former Team USA and Lincoln Pride QB Orion Harris who ranks 4th in the league in passing at 1382 yards, and 7th in passing TDs with 11 as well as a defense that ranks 8th in scoring, 8th in total yards, 13th against the pass, and 4th against the run.

Meanwhile the St. Paul Lynx will attempt to make a championship push this season with rumors of GM Jon Hallquist being offered the position running rampant online, but even without the 2-time Impact Bowl Champion in the front office, the team is likely to use its draft capital to be aggressive at the trade deadline.

BREAKING NEWS: JON HALLQUIST CONFIRMS RUMORS OF RETURN TO HIFL, 2-TIME CHAMP SET TO TAKE COMMAND OF ST PAUL LYNX!

ST PAUL --- Fans have woken up this morning to a surprising confirmation to a rumor many thought was simply a pipe dream.  The St Paul Lynx are preparing to officially sign two-time Impact Bowl winning General Manager Jon Hallquist to take over the front office of a Lynx clubhouse that was turned upside down over the past few weeks.

GM Jon released a statement through his private attorney and business manager with a single sentence quote that set the football world on fire when he said "I'm Back."

The clever play on his former employer, Arnold Reigns came as a surprise even after news of Lynx owner Barbara Snow's efforts to lure the former Cobras and Lumberjacks GM back to the league were reported earlier in the week.  Many felt was more due diligence than it was a realistic hire with others calling it a pipedream.   Now the dream is a reality and GM Jon is returning to the league.  Details of the contract have not yet been made available so it is unknown if Hallquist's return is to "simply" make a push for a championship this season or if this is a longer term partnership.

BREAKING NEWS: NEW JERSEY DRAGONS ANNOUNCE THE HIRING OF HIFL NEWCOMER RYAN STORM THE 3RD GENERAL MANAGER IN FRANCHISE HISTORY!

NEWARK -- The New Jersey Dragons owner Pang Tong announced that the club has decided to hire a new general manager this afternoon.  On the heels of several front office shifts around the league, the Dragons have brought in a fresh face to the High Impact Football League.

Tong named Ryan Storm as the franchises third General Manager following in the footsteps of GM Kirk (S5-S10) and GM Stark (S11-S15)  little is known about GM Storm, but fans are excited to have a new vision for the future.  While current head coach and team legend Joan Swope is under contract for 3 seasons, the rest of his staff is on a one year deal, so the Dragons could be a very different looking club next season.

Fans are excited to see what the new GM does with the team especially with expiring contracts and potential trade assets on both sides of the ball if the team falls out of contention before the week 10 trade deadline.

BREAKING NEWS: LINCOLN PRIDE ACQUIRE QB MICHAEL WORLEY, RB EZEKIEL ELLIOTT IN BLOCKBUSTER TRADE WITH SALT LAKE RENEGADES!

SALT LAKE CITY --- After 2+ seasons with the Salt Lake Renegades, former 3rd overall draft pick Michael Worley has shockingly been traded to the Lincoln Pride for a package of players and 5 draft picks, two of which are future first round picks.

Worley, 26, was seen as untouchable last season after completing a sophomore campaign with a 69% completion rate, 4450 yards passing, 35 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions however 6 weeks into his 3rd season he now finds himself on the move to Lincoln, Nebraska where he will be asked to rescue the Lincoln Pride from a disappointing start to their own year.

Worley struggled this season, seeing his completion percentage dip to 63% while his yards per game dropped from 278 down to 196 and his INTs ballooned to an average of one per game.   The struggles were enough for Lucy Oldnick to shop the former Oklahoma product and now he is a member of the Lincoln Pride.   The trade breakdown as follows...

QuoteLincoln Receives:
QB Michael Worley
RB Ezekiel Elliott

Salt Lake Receives:
QB Hidalgo Ginobili
RB Garrison Akers
S17 3rd Round Pick (Lincoln)
S18 1st Round Pick (Lincoln)
S18 2nd Round Pick (Lincoln)
S19 1st Round Pick (Lincoln)
S19 3rd Round Pick (Lincoln)

Salt Lake Retains: 3MM in Bonus
Lincoln Retains: 1.2MM in Salary

The deal surprised many around the league if for no other reason than the fact that Lincolns former starting QB Hidalgo Ginobili had not only just signed a 3 year deal to join the Pride out of the IFAF's Argentinian National Team, but also because he is the younger brother of Pride offensive coordinator Anderson Ginobili, a connection that made many feel like GM Rex Evans was married to the QB whether he wanted to be or not.

The Pride have struggled this season losing 4 straight before picking up their first win of the season this week against the San Antonio Knights.  Through five games the team has ranked 23rd in passing, 22nd in total offense, 18th in scoring, and 22nd in points against while ranking second to last against the pass, allowing 337.6 yards per game.

GM Evans has worked hard to fix his teams obvious weaknesses, first trading a first round pick to the DC Cobras to bring back recently departed cornerback Alan Molina, and now trading two more firsts along with more to bring in Worley under center.    The fans appreciate GM Evans aggressive approach, especially knowing that this is the most likely the final season for legendary linebacker Ervin Edward.

Worley will be thrown right into the fire as his first two opponents with his new club will be the last remaining undefeated team in the league, the Tucson Stars and then a road trip to take on the two-time defending Champions the Winnipeg Arctic Foxes.

BREAKING NEWS: ORLANDO SIGNS PAIR OF PFL PLAYERS SPARKING THREAT OF ALL OUT WAR BETWEEN LEAGUES!

ORLANDO --  A string of unexpected moves from GM Rebel and the Orlando Stampede have tension running high in and outside of the High Impact Football League especially after the latest move has brought the HIFL and their biggest rival league, Thee Professional Football League (PFL) to the brink of an all out bidding war for talent; a war that the PFL will most likely win thanks to their current cap-less salary structure.

Monday morning started with a surprise as the Orlando Stampede shipped last seasons MVP and record setting rusher Alesana Tuilagi to the Vancouver Wolfpack along with a conditional draft pick in exchange for a 1st round pick and Djokovic Petrovic.  The swap of position-fluid players was a shock to many due in large part to Tuilagi's popularity and success in Orlando that lead to the Stampede giving the reining MVP a 4 year deal this off-season, but what would follow would only make matters worse.

Wednesday Orlando announced their intent to use the amnesty clause on linebacker Rhett Purdy.  The amnesty clause has always been an off-season only option with the only exception being when the league has granted special permission due to a salary cap violation and league fine that required a team lower their cap number to become complaint.   The move did not garner a penalty due to a special circumstance based on GM Rebel's strong patronage of the league's GOAT initiative, but the goodwill quickly ran out for GM Rebel and the Stampede when the team worked to finalize their roster for the week.

After releasing Rhett Purdy legally, the team offered and signed RB Michael Peralta and DE Clinton Bowling to a pair of 1 year deals valued at $750K in salary and $250K in signing bonus.   The contracts were perfectly legal from a financial standpoint, however GM Rebel's decision to contact and sign players currently under contract with PFL clubs quickly drew the ire of league co-founders Ace Profits and Monique Harpo as well as the front offices of the Las Vegas Gamblers and the Boise Beavers.

The HIFL's current policy is for teams to not attempt to sign players from the PFL in a mutual agreement with the rival league that they would not pursue tampering with players currently under contract with the HIFL either.   The peace had been kept, but with the deals made official the PFL is poised to retaliate and has threatened to do so in a massive way, largely because the league operates without the confines of a salary cap, allowing them to offer much more lucrative contracts and lure players away from the HIFL despite the league's higher level of competition, at least at this stage of the two league's existences.

The HIFL league office is working to protect it's clubs from the PFL's interference, but the PFL is expected to make contact with players from not only Orlando but any and all teams throughout the league as a message to the HIFL not to mess with the PFL.   CJ Gates, the HIFL's current GM representative, is expected to step into the talks in order to help but it is currently unknown how much help the Miami GM can truly provide after an internal PFL memo sent to every PFL club leaked.    The exert from the memo reads "...if its war they want, it is war they will get.  The HIFL is in for a rude awakening. Begin contacting players immediately!"

The PFL also barred agent Bobby Shapiro, the other man behind the illegal negotiations in Orlando, from representing talent in the PFL, meaning his current clients in the league will most likely change reps soon.

Meanwhile in Orlando, team owner Matt Adores mandated that both Bowling and Peralta be scratched from the active roster prior to this weekends loss vs. London, some believe Mr. Adores actions were done in an attempt to insure the now former PFL players did not play in a game during the controversy.

GM Gates is expected to meet with Commissioner Wilkinson early in the week to discuss the state of the HIFL and it's general managers.

BREAKING NEWS: PFL/HIFL PEACE TALKS FALL THROUGH AS GM GATES RESIGNS AS LEADER OF GM UNION DURING INTENSE MEETING!

MAR-A-LAGO, FL -- All eyes were on Mar-a-Lago as representatives from the PFL and HIFL met face to face to discuss rising tensions with a focus on keeping the peace and finding a solution to end the cross-league poaching of players already signed to another league.  While the meeting appeared to be close to wrapping up with an agreed upon sum of $15MM being set to go from HIFL to PFL and a mutual signed agreement ending contract tampering and talent poaching during the regular and post season, things quickly spiraled out of control when objections of using funds from the GM Emergency Fund were floated by GM Gates; and then when GM Rebel joined the meeting and seemed unwilling to drain his club's BP to appease the angry mob on both sides of the aisle, the pressure began to mount as internal bickering took over for the HIFL contingent.

GM Gates breaking point came at a crucial time for the HIFL, his decision to step away cut off the league's GMs from the GM Emergency Fund, meaning the $14MM in the fund ($5MM of which was donated by Orlando just moments before GM Gates stepped away) was no longer available to help facilitate a deal.

With GM Gates stepping down the league is in the process of nominating candidates to replace him in the interim, but the war between leagues may already be well underway by the time the process is completed.
